God is not the Ice Cream Man
When I take a shower – I get to reflect on the previous day, or the upcoming day or circumstances I’m in. It’s quiet, and distraction free. God meets me there, but not in a weird way.
I have been thinking about relationships, and the things that surround them. I have been thinking about friends and their lives, and how to encourage them. I’ve been thinking about God and what His presence looks like. And I realized something.
God isn’t the guy who drives the Ice Cream truck.
You know what I’m talking about. The high pitched tunes, sometimes familiar, sometimes not. But you can never mistake it for anything else. Signaling you, and all the other kids that sweet treats are near by.
That isn’t God. And I think a lot of the time, we assign that characteristic to Him. We wait and we wait, and we focus on things that we feel will glorify Him. And we wait for Him to signal to us that he is near by. If we’ve been good at doing those things, we get rewarded and if we aren’t, well – we’re punished.
That’s not God at all. We hope He gives us what we want, or we wait and wait and wait, but the signal never comes, and we miss opportunities or relationships.
We are built to be autonomous. (before you check out here, hear me out.) We are told to wait on God. Yes. Yes 100%. However, I don’t think we understand what that means. Perhaps I’m way off, but we’re sitting and waiting to hear the familiar sounding tunes to know and we miss the opportunity – because we didn’t hear the tune.
Weigh your decisions on Scripture. Make your decision:
“…You need to consider your own desire. If the Bible is silent about your decision, and if one choice is not clearly wiser than the other, then do what you want. You have the freedom to do so, and God sovereignly works out His plan through your desires (Psalm 37:4; Philippians 2:13).” (John MacArthur)
Sometimes inaction is worse than action. All moves should be intentional and with the right motive. That motive should be to honor God above all else, while also claiming the desires of your heart, because God wants you to.
