Recently, I was at a comedy show at Dallas Comedy House. I enjoy laughter, so I went with a buddy, and the show was quite hilarious. The comedian used a German accent for the first 1/3 of his show, I legitimately thought he might be German. (only for a few moments.)
The show reached a point where it went religious, and something happened that surprised me. The comedian questioned the audience. “Is any one here a Christian? Raise your hand.”
I didn’t raise mine.
Not because I am ashamed, or that I’m not a Christian. That’s not it. I rejoice in the fact that my Savior died for me, and gave me the ability to become righteous.
I wasn’t afraid of public ridicule, I mean, I survived high school. You can ask Matt or Shane how socially awkward and goofy looking I was, and still am for that fact.
I expect to be challenged and mocked for my belief in Christ. Scripture says to expect it, and to “…be prepared to give an answer to all who ask about the hope you have” 1 Peter 3:15.
It wasn’t for disbelief, because I am a believer in Christ. I believe He is wholly God, wholly man, and the ONLY one who can save me, from my transgressions and sins against Holy God.
Simply, I didn’t raise my hand because I was filtering what he said. I couldn’t believe he had asked that question. It caught me pretty well off guard; I didn’t have time to respond to anything.
The bit went on to mock Christians for around 5 minutes, which, is to be expected after that kind of question in this kind of setting.
“In the end, it doesn’t even matter.” – Linkin Park (for the record, I don’t like Linkin Park, unless they’re jammin’ with Jay-Z.)
God can still be glorified even in my moment of inaction, and since then, I’ve had an increased sense of boldness for the Gospel. And I’m ok with that.
