Misnomer: We Become Angels?

Misnomer: We become angels when we die.

When we die, what happens? As followers of Christ, those who are dead in Christ, what happens to us? Do we become angels, to meet the requests or guide our loved ones?

I don’t think so. Not that I don’t want to think that we do, or that they’re able to do so for me. The sentiment is great, and helps ease the pain of missing them, and helps us cope. I get that, and that we don’t want to hurt. But they’re not there to guide us, or intercede on our behalf.

Moving forward.

The first questions to tackle are: “What and who are angels?” and “What happens to those who die?”

Angels are beings created by God, Psalm 148:2-5. They were created lower than Christ, and separate from humans. When Man dies, he does not become an angel. We don’t become spirits who hover around those we love, and protect them. That’s not our role, and we were created separately. However, when we die, we do serve a similar purpose to that of angels; that is, those who are in Christ. We then exist to bring glory to God the Father.

We are also not to ask the dead to do things for us. They do not cross over from death to us, Luke 16:19-31.

It’s a tough pill to swallow, and honestly, it is scary. The thought of those who have passed away, and not knowing what they’re doing, or where they are, is scary as heck.

Let’s be straightfoward here, if we are in Christ, we will have eternity in Heaven, in glorified bodies, and worshiping God. If we are not in Christ, them we will be spending eternity in hell, where we are cast into a lake of fire; eternally separated from God.

At no point does Scripture indicate that we’re going to become angels, nor does it say we have work to do after our final breath. A true misnomer indeed.
